The Palace of Bourissa Hills
Home of the Pterodactyls
Ballpark Profile | 01/05/11
Located at the corner of South Meridian and Ada Streets, The Palace of Bourissa Hills has
been home to the Pterodactyls since 2008.  However, the ballpark is the original home to
whiffleball in New Carlisle, playing host to pick-up games long before the founding of the Old
Republic Whiffle Ball League.

Built in 1996, it is part of the New Prairie Little League complex. The park's primary use is for
tee-ball, but its dimensions made it perfect for a whiffleball field. Growing up, many current
ORWBL players frequently played doubleheaders at the field during summer vacation.  At that
time, the style of play was to use duct-taped balls and bats, and home runs often ended up
out on the street.

In 2007, the inaugural ORWBL season, Marc Lindsey founded the Banana Slugs and chose
the tee-ball field for his team's home.  Lindsey named the ballpark "The Palace of Bourissa
Hills," after Bourissa Hills Park located just down the street.  The Banana Slugs stay at The
Palace lasted only one season, as the New Carlisle Newts signed Lindsey prior to the 2008
season.  The owner-less Banana Slugs had to fold (they would return in 2009 under Adam
Rehlander).

Pterodactyls owner Jared Emmons immediately took the opportunity to move his team into
the ballpark.  The 'Dactyls previous home field, the Polish Grounds, was located next door to
The Palace.  However, the Polish Grounds, at 140-feet to all fields, was far too spacious for
whiffleball.

The park was briefly renamed Ryan Theriot Field, when the naming rights were acquired by
the Newts in a trade.  The Newts eventually traded back the rights in exchange for Jordan
Colanese in 2009.

The Palace is often considered the crosstown ballpark to Migley Field, as the 'Dactyls and
Newts have had an interleague rivalry since 2008.  In 2009, The Palace played host to the
World Series between the two clubs, with the 'Dactyls prevailing.

The ballpark is the largest in the league in terms of seating capacity, seating approximately
100 fans.  However, attendance at The Palace typically does not reach double-digits.
