The Old Republic Whiffle Ball League, abbreviated as ORWBL, was founded in 2007. Originally, the league was
divided into the National League and American League, with five teams in each league:
The charter members of the National League: New Carlisle Newts, Autobots, Lil' Saints, Cornhole, and Big
Uglies. In the American League: Pterodactyls, Banana Slugs, Phat Dong, Team Stank, and Red Gold.
The first season ended with no champion, as a work stoppage shortened the season. Regular season
champions were the Newts in the NL and the Dactyls in the AL. The attempt at a postseason is not officially
recognized by the league.
In 2008, the ORWBL returned with only eight teams. The Newts, 'Dactyls, Lil' Saints, Team Stank, and Phat Dong
remained in the league, while the others dropped out. New franchises added in the second season were the
New Lydick Lakers, La Porte White Sox, and 1-2-3 Swat.
The 2008 campaign featured pennant races rather than a playoff system. Unlike 2007, the season was able to
be completed. The White Sox became the first team to go undefeated in the regular season (24-0). The Newts
finished again at the top of the National League (20-4). The Sox defeated the Newts in the first ever World Series,
four games to one.
The league expanded to a 42-game schedule for the 2009 season. A three-division format was established to
accommodate the league's 10 teams.
Three expansion teams entered the league: KLRC,. Bajer Beerfarts, and Emery's Army. The B-Slugs and
Marmosets (formerly Big Uglies) returned after an absence in 2008. Four teams folded, including the defending
champion La Porte White Sox. However, the Sox returned in 2010.
The division champions were the 'Dactyls (East), Newts (Central), and B-Slugs (West). Expansion franchise
Emery's Army took the Wild Card with an impressive 30-win season.
The 'Dactyls swept the Newts in the 2009 ORWBL World Series to capture the franchise's first ORWBL
Championship.
The 2010 season saw a return to the AL/NL format. AL East champions Pterodactyls finished the regular season
at an impressive 38-4 mark. However the 'Dactyls, who at one point were the third-ranked team in the nation,
were swept out of the playoffs by the South Bend Sour Wowers (formerly the Beerfarts).
The Sour Wowers completed a perfect 9-0 postseason with a sweep of We've Got the Runs to win the 2010
ORWBL World Series.
The Sour Wowers dominated once again 2011, taking the league's best record (34-8), and sweeping through
the playoffs. The Sour Wowers own a 15-0 record all-time in the postseason. South Bend defeated the Wills
Township Federalists (formerly The Runs), in a World Series rematch.
