Newts hoping to right ship in 2012
Offseason moves expected as team tries to rebound
ORWBL.com Report | 11/22/11
NEW CARLISLE- The New Carlisle Newts find themselves in unfamiliar territory during this
offseason. Coming off the first losing season in franchise history, the Newts front office is
expected to make any moves that are necessary to help the team rebound in 2012.
New Carlisle has already announced the signing of former Banana Slugs manager Brad
Schmitt. Schmitt, a four-time All-Star, has the ability to hit to all fields and may see a boost in
his power numbers at Migley Field.
Schmitt also could play a role in the Newts on-going recruitment of Scotty Jurczak. The Newts
have pursued Jurczak for the past two offseasons, and the prospect of playing alongside his
former manager could only be a positive factor.
While the Newts are always big players in the free agent market, perhaps the most important
focus of this offseason will be solidifying a lineup with players already signed with the team.
The Newts have played very few games in the past two seasons with both Marc Lindsey and
Garrett Curless in the lineup together.
The Newts will also be aiming for expanded roles from rookie Matt Went and crafty veteran
Jordan Colanese. These powerful bats will provide a nice complement for other lineup
regulars Koby Keck, Kaylor Keck, Jeff Szczypiorski, and Cody Williamson.
Future Hall of Famer Matt Flagg did not appear in any regular season games in 2011,
however did appear in the Newts first round playoff loss and the City Championship. Flagg's
status for 2012 is unknown at this time.
New Carlisle has sent down the speedy Joe Sosinski to the Triple-A affiliate Naperville Newts
and have officially released Andrew Faher to clear out roster spots.
