AL sweeps NL as All Star Game returns to Migley

NEW CARLISLE- After rain forced All Star festivities to The Playground Commons in 2019, the All Star Game returned to its usual home of Migley Field.

With the wind howling straight in, runs were extremely hard to come by from start to finish. After managing their respective teams to the World Series last year, Koby Keck (Newts-NL) and Alex Friedman (Magic-AL) managed their respective teams.

Unfortunately the Granger Panthers players were not able to make it as they were busy setting up for the Cam Snead Tournament which was held the following day.

Therefore, NL Manager Koby Keck had to make a few changes to his starting lineup as Aidan Cotter took the mound for the NL as he was opposed by Flat Rock's Mark Richards.

Maple City's Jared Jonkman and Bourissa Hills' DJ Hill got the scoring started in the 3rd inning as they each hit a solo HR, giving the American League a 2-0 advantage half way through.

Both starters pitched well as there were only 4 runs combined in Game 1. Richards tossed 3 scoreless innings for the American League before being removed from the game for Twin Branch's Andrew Doran who was a late replacement for JP Kehoe.

Jared Jonkman would add his 2nd Home Run of the game in the 4th inning as that would help propel him to win co-MVP honors.

Doran would allow only 1 run in his 2 innings of work before being pulled for Maple City's Wes Ellis. Ellis helped himself out that inning as he made a spectacular diving catch on a Garrett Curless pop up as it would end up being one of more spectacular plays made all night.

Ellis shut the door on the National League as the AL took Game 1 by the score of 3-1. All in all, the American League outfield of Kody Webb, DJ Hill, and Zach Rehlander played spectacular defense as that enabled the pitching staff to do what they did.

Hits and Runs were even harder to come by in Game 2 as Elkhart's Walter Griffin III took the mound for the NL as he was opposed by Maple City's Shane Anderson.

Both starters did a fantastic job on the mound as Anderson actually took a no hitter into the 4th inning. In the 4th, the National League and American League traded a pair of solo shots tying the game at 1.

In the 6th, Maple City's Caleb Jonkman pitched a scoreless inning setting the stage up for a walk off opportunity. After the NL was able to retire Ryan Warmoth and Frankie Minerva, Mishawaka's Anthony Rieff came up to the plate.

Rieff who is no stranger to success at Migley Field blasted a walk off HR through the wind which clinched the series victory for the American League.

With the wind howling in, both games flew by very quickly so both teams happily agreed to play a 3rd game. Much like games 1 & 2, the American League pitching staff was able to shut down the NL as they scored 1 run on a solo shot in the 6th to avoid the shutout.

Walter Griffin III took the mound once again for the National League. Caleb Jonkman started Game 3 for the American League and was able to pick up the win as Kody Webb, Ryan Warmoth, and Nick Thoman each belted a solo HR in the 2nd. Caleb Jonkman finished the night winning 2 of 3 games on the mound for the AL.

Andrew Doran took the mound in the 2nd and held the National League scoreless all the way up into the 6th when he was pulled. Ryan Warmoth added his 2nd HR of the game in the 4th inning, extending the AL lead to 4-0.

Twin Branch's Frankie Minerva would add 3 run Homer in the 5th inning before Hudson Lake's Ben McDonald would come around to score which was actually the only run not scored on a home run all night.

The AL skipper Alex Friedman came in to close the door in the 6th and complete the sweep for his squad. After immediately allowing a solo HR, Friedman got the next 3 men to ground out right back to him, as the American League completed the 3 game sweep at Migley.

It was the first time that the American League has won since 2017 when they took the first 2 games of the series at Migley.

Maple City's Jared Jonkman and Mishawaka's Anthony Rieff would end up taking home All Star Game co-MVP honors.

It was a wonderful night for ORWBL all around as the league's brightest stars gathered on the hallowed grounds of Migley Field. It was a great night for league camaraderie as Drew Luther hosted a league-wide cookout on his property right above Migley Field.

It was great to see all of ORWBL's top players gathered together once again as that was an uncertain thing just a few months ago. Expect another great atmosphere and a much larger crowd 2 weekends from now for the Hometown Cup.
