Elkhart's Walter Griffin III and New Carlisle's Matt Soos Named 2024 Cy Young Award Winners
Throughout the week, we will be announcing the winners of the 2024 ORWBL regular season awards which were voted on by all sixteen Managers. Players/Managers received 3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 points for a 2nd place vote, and 1 point for a 3rd place vote. We will announce the winners of one award each day on the American and National League side leading up into Game 1 of the 2024 ORWBL World Series on Sunday.
Awards week rolls on as today we announce the 2024 Cy Young Award winners. Starting off in the American League, it was Walter Griffin III of Elkhart BFAM who won received the most votes to take home the award for the 2nd consecutive season. After winning back to back World Series MVP's in 2022 and 2023, Griffin III now repeats as the American League Cy Young Award winner.
The Back to Back AL Cy Young Award winner finished the 2024 season with the most wins in all of ORWBL with 19. He finished as the American League leader in ERA among qualified pitchers (5.09) while also finishing 2nd in the AL in Strikeouts with 14. He made the American League All Star team once again and he now joins Matt Serge, Jared Emmons, George Stainko, Shane Anderson, Andrew Doran, and Griffin Smith as the only players to win multiple Cy Young Awards.
Moving onto the National League, it was Matt Soos of the New Carlisle Newts who took home the most votes to win his first NL Cy Young Award. The crafty veteran took on a massive role on the mound for New Carlisle this season and it has paid off tremendously as they are now fighting for a World Series title.
Soos finished as the ORWBL league leader in ERA with a sparkling 2.94 Earned Run Average as the Veteran shut down the toughest of lineups all season long, making a serious run at the ERA record. Soos finished with a 9-4 record while tossing 5 K's throughout the season. New Carlisle finished the season 9-4 in games where Soos was the deciding pitcher and 6-11 when he was not as his success on the mound went hand in hand with New Carlisle's success for much of the season. This is the first time that the Wiffle legend has taken home this award as he adds yet another accolade to his storied resume.
