Week 2 ORWBL Recap

Granger Panthers @ Union Mills Goon Squad

GM 1: UM, 4-3

GM 2: GR, 19-1

GM 3: GR, 21-6

This matchup featured a pair of 3-0 teams heading into Week 2 as the Granger Panthers made the trip to Union Mills to take on the Goon Squad. The Goon Squad delivered a shocking victory in Game 1 which certainly made its way around the league pretty quickly. Granger was able to avoid any further damage though as they really turned it on in Games 2 & 3 as they dominated in both of those games, scoring at least eight runs in the first inning of both. While the Panthers won the series, the Goon Squad has to be feeling pretty good after taking one from one of the best teams in the league as these guys are definitely taking some steps in the right direction in year 3. Goon Squad has another chance to take a game (or more) from an undefeated team as they host the South Bend Truffle Butter (6-0) this Sunday.

Notable stats from the series:

(GR) Griffin Smith: 14-22, 10 R, 3 RBI, 3 HR, 15 IP, 10 ER, (2-1)

(GR) Brandon Campbell: 11-21, 9 R, 9 RBI, 6 HR

(UM) Josh Trim: 5-14, 4 R, 5 RBI, 4 HR, 3 IP, 11 ER

Week 3 matchups:

Leprechauns @ Panthers

Truffle Butter @ Goon Squad

Maple City Magic @ Crown Point OTF

GM 1: MC, 11-2

GM 2: MC, 7-3

GM 3: MC, 6-2

The Crown Point OTF had their first scheduled home series of the season but with their ballpark situation not figured out just yet, they served as the home team at Magic Park. The Magic were without Caleb Jonkman but they were able to receive some great contributions from John Arndt and Drew Luther. Jared Jonkman picked up the win on the mound in all three games as he now holds a 1.74 ERA to go along with a 4-0 record. The Magic have not had the most favorable hitting conditions yet so they have to be looking forward to their first ever trip to The Garage on Sunday as they will take on the County Line Kings in a rematch from last year's ALCS. While OTF was not able to pick up their first win, they were still able to give Maple City a run for their money as they took a 2-0 lead in both Games 2 and 3 while also making many fantastic plays out in the field.

Notable stats from the series:

(MC) John Arndt: 8-15, 7 R, 7 RBI, 5 HR

(MC) Drew Luther: 8-15, 5 R, 4 RBI, 4 HR

(MC) Jared Jonkman: 6-17, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR, 17 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 3 K's (3-0)

Flat Rock Cyclones @ Bourissa Hills Wildcards

GM 1: FR, 13-12

GM 2: FR, 36-6

GM 3: FR, 22-6

The Flat Rock Cyclones traveled to the Palace to take on the Wildcards in what was the second matchup of the weekend featuring a pair of 3-0 teams. On this day the Cyclones were simply too much for the Wildcards as they outscored Bourissa Hills 71-24 on the day. The Cyclones "Big 3" is quickly turning into a "Big 4" as Tyler Shupert is putting up MVP caliber numbers to start the season. While conditions have obviously been very favorable, there is no denying that the Cyclones are hammering the ball to start the season, scoring a league high 138 runs through their first 6 games!

Notable stats from the series:

County Line Kings @ Twin Branch Billy Goats

GM 1: CL, 7-2

GM 2: CL, 10-0

GM 3: TB, 4-3

The County Line Kings moved to 4-2 on the young season after winning their 2nd straight series to open up the season. Similar to Opening Day, the Kings came out of the gates hot by winning Games 1 & 2 as they outscored the Billy Goats 17-2 in those games. Kadin Abegg was dominant in both games, allowing only 2 runs through his 11 innings work. Staring an 0-6 record right in the face, the Billy Goats turned things around and picked up their first win of the season. While it has definitely not been the start that they wanted, they will get an opportunity to take on a new team in Week 3 as they will travel to take on the Pink Pandas where they will hope to pick up their first series win of the year. It is worth noting that the Billy Goats have been rather shorthanded to start the season. Meanwhile for County Line, they will play host to the Maple City Magic in an ALCS rematch.

Notable stats from the series:

(CL) Colton Boren: 9-16, 6 R, 6 RBI, 2 HR

(CL) Kody Webb: 9-18, 8 R, 7 RBI, 5 HR

(TB) Keigan White: 4-8, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR

Week 3 matchups:

Magic @ Kings

Hudson Lake Heat @ Mill Pond Pink Pandas

GM 1: HL, 4-0

GM 2: HL, 11-4

GM 3: MP, 3-2

After not scoring a single run on Opening Day with the wind howling in at Magic Park, the Hudson Lake Heat were able to have some success at the plate against Mill Pond. The Heat picked up their first and second victories of the season by winning Games 1 & 2 before the Pink Pandas were able to win the series finale after a Zachary Christy walk-off HR. The Heat now have a +2 run differential through 6 games so they will be an interesting team to watch next week when they take on the Wildcards who just got swept by the Cyclones. The Pink Pandas have now won a game in each of their first two series and will look for their first series win next week at home against the struggling Billy Goats.

Notable stats from the series:

(MP) Zach Christy: 6-12, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 6 IP, 2 ER, 1 K, (1-0)

(MP) Todd Snyder: 5-13, 2 R

Heat @ Wildcards

Billy Goats @ Pink Pandas

New Carlisle Newts @ Mishawaka Meatspins

GM 1: MM, 8-3

GM 2: NC, 10-3

GM 3: NC, 22-12

The New Carlisle Newts continued their 9 game road trip to start the season by making the trip out to Mishawaka to take on the Meatspins for the first meeting between these two teams. Anthony Rieff did a great job limiting the Newts to just 3 runs in the Opener as Mishawaka won their first game of the season. In Games 2 and 3, the Newts were powered by the Soos brothers who combined for 15 Home Runs on the series. Although Game 3 went to extras, the Newts were able to pull away as they ended up winning the rubber match by 10 runs. New Carlisle leads the National League in runs scored after 2 weeks of play as they have put up 109 runs in their first 6 games. Their 9 game road trip will come to a close next week as they will take on the Glen Lee Skeeters who will be searching for their first win. Meanwhile, Mishawaka will look to shake off the rust as they will play host to the Great Lakes Godfathers in what should be a very fun series to watch.

(NC) Matt Soos: 11-20, 9 R, 10 RBI, 7 HR

(NC) Scott Soos: 11-21, 10 R, 8 RBI, 8 HR

(NC) Garrett Ruiz: 9-20, 7 R, 6 RBI, 5 HR

(MM) Joey Schuster: 11-20, 10 R, 6 RBI, 5 HR

Week 3 matchups:

Newts @ Skeeters

Godfathers @ Meatspins

Great Lakes Godfathers @ Lynn Street Leprechauns

GM 1: LS, 9-7

GM 2: GL, 10-9

GM 3: GL, 7-5

The Great Lakes Godfathers traveled to storied Rocko's Park for a 3 game series between a couple of pretty evenly matched teams. The Leps came out of the gates motivated as they were able to win Game 1 on what would have been Rocko's birthday. The Godfathers were able to turn their luck around from their as they were able to win a pair of close ones in Games 2 & 3 to win the series. Game 3 ended on a wild sequence as the Leps were trailing 7-1 headed to the bottom of the 6th. The Leps rallied to make it 7-5 as they had two runners on before Nate Hansen hit a deep fly ball that was brought back into the park by a leaping Chaz Boyd that saved what would have been a walk off homer. The next batter was Dylan Kegley who looked like he had hit a what would be walkoff but Nick Fritz did the same thing that Boyd did, tipping the ball back into play while leaping over the outfield fence. Godfathers manager Mark Haase grabbed the ball, stepped on 2nd before firing it back to Whitt Huffer to complete the double play to clinch the series and the win. All in all it was a wild finish to what turned out to be a very competitive series between two evenly matched teams.

Notable stats from the series:

(GL) Andy Sieradzki: 9-15, 8 R, 8 RBI, 8 HR, 11 1/3 IP, 14 ER, 2 K's, (2-0)

(LS) Nate Hansen: 7-14, 6 R, 6 RBI, 5 HR

Week 3 matchups:

Godfathers @ Meatspins

Leprechauns @ Panthers

Glen Lee Skeeters @ South Bend Truffle Butter

GM 1: SB, 5-4

GM 2: SB, 8-6

GM 3: SB, 7-6

This matchup featured a pair of first year teams who started out their inaugural ORWBL seasons in different ways. South Bend came out of the gates hot in Week 1 not only winning but sweeping their first ever ORWBL series. On the other hand the Skeeters struggled to get much going against the Goon Squad as they were searching for that elusive first ORWBL victory. The series was competitive from start to finish but it was the more experienced wiffleball team in the Truffle Butter who were able to do just enough to win all three games. The Skeeters competed in all three games but fell just short, losing games by 1 run, 2 runs, and 1 run. The Skeeters will look to try again next week to pick up their first win and it will not be easy as they have their home opener against the New Carlisle Newts. Meanwhile, South Bend heads into Week 3 in soul possession of first place in the National League after winning their first 6 games against the Leprechauns and Skeeters.

Notable stats from the series:

(SB) Jeremy Ratajczyk: 10-16, 7 R, 6 RBI, 4 HR

(SB) Ryan Galiher: 9-16, 6 R, 7 RBI, 5 HR

(GLEN) Peyton Doran: 7-15, 3 R, 12 IP, 12 ER, 5 K's, (0-2)
